UK police investigate an arson attack on Jewish charity ambulances in London, suspected linked to Iran.
The Metropolitan Police are investigating an arson attack on four ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer service in London. The incident is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime, with detectives looking into claims of responsibility from an Islamist group with alleged ties to Iran.
Mark Rowley, the police chief, stated that they are examining all leads, including online statements from groups that have previously claimed attacks in Europe and have suspected Iranian state connections. No injuries were reported during the nighttime attack, which caused significant damage to nearby homes and left the vehicles heavily charred.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer strongly condemned the attack, calling it 'horrific.' He emphasized the need for unity in combating antisemitism. Religious and political leaders have also expressed their outrage over the incident, highlighting the vulnerable position of the UK's Jewish community.
A video posted on Telegram by an Islamist group allegedly showed footage of the ambulances being set on fire and provided a map of their location. This group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands and is suspected to have links with pro-Iran networks. Despite concerns about state involvement, Rowley noted it's too early to directly attribute the attack to Iran.
Community members are expressing fear and anger over the attack, which has increased the sense of vulnerability within the Jewish community. Security measures for Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers are being bolstered ahead of Passover. However, some criticize the government's handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations that have sometimes led to anti-Semitic rhetoric and acts.
Archbishop Sarah Mullally of Canterbury and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis have both condemned the attack, with the rabbi calling it a 'sickening assault' and stressing the need for collective resolve against hatred. The incident underscores the growing challenges faced by Jewish communities globally in combating antisemitism and ensuring their safety.
