Russian weapons and tactics from Ukraine influence Myanmar's civil war, with the military regime using advanced drones and airpower to gain an upper hand.
Al Jazeera reports that Russian-supplied airpower, intelligence, and battlefield tactics from its war in Ukraine are helping Myanmar’s military government gain the upper hand in an ongoing civil war. The conflict is now entering its sixth year.
China wields significant influence over Myanmar’s generals and ethnic armed groups, but Russian-made jets, helicopters, and drones have provided the military with a decisive battlefield edge. These tools include advanced drones like the Albatross-M5 and Orlan-10E, which can remain airborne for 16 hours, and kamikaze-style VT-40 suicide drones.
Military government air strikes have killed numerous civilians, including women and children. The death toll from aerial raids has risen significantly, with over 4,865 reported deaths between February 1, 2021, and March 13, 2026.
Myanmar’s military introduced conscription in 2024, swelling its ranks by nearly 100,000 soldiers. This has allowed the junta to carry out human wave attacks, a tactic first seen in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Moscow has emerged as Myanmar’s most important defense partner, providing munitions and anti-drone systems. The military regime has also adopted Russia’s 'meat assaults' tactics, where waves of untrained soldiers are thrown at enemy defensive lines with little regard for casualties.
According to conflict monitor ACLED, the use of advanced drones and anti-drone systems by Myanmar's military has made drone warfare central to their operations. The regime has established a dedicated Drone Warfare Directorate and specialized training units to integrate these technologies into their tactics.
