Germany will help Ukraine develop long-range missiles without Western restrictions. Russia proposes peace talks, while fighting continues on the front lines.
Germany has pledged to assist Ukraine in developing its own long-range missile systems, free from restrictions imposed by Western nations. This commitment was made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The move aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russia's ongoing invasion.
Merz emphasized Germany's dedication to equipping the Ukrainian army with the necessary resources for successful defense, including enhanced domestic missile production. This comes as some Western-supplied weapons have faced limitations on range and targets, a sensitive issue due to fears of potential Russian retaliation against NATO countries.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov proposed direct peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on June 2, though Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that no progress could be made without Russia fulfilling its promise to deliver a memorandum outlining Moscow's position. Tensions remain high as both sides continue military operations, including drone attacks.
Zelenskyy has called for deeper defense cooperation with Europe and the U.S., stressing the importance of sustained military funding and long-range capabilities. He also expressed openness to high-level peace talks involving himself, Putin, and potentially Trump.
