US officials targeted in AI scam impersonating Trump's chief of staff, Susie Wiles. The FBI warned of similar AI-driven attacks on government officials.
Several US government officials have been targeted by a sophisticated AI-driven scam, with perpetrators impersonating Susie Wiles, President Donald Trump's chief of staff.
The impersonators, suspected of leveraging artificial intelligence to mimic Wiles' voice, contacted governors, business leaders, and senators. This occurred after gaining access to contact information through a breach of Wiles' phone.
While the calls and texts did not originate from Wiles' actual number, the uncanny resemblance in voice raised serious concerns. President Trump downplayed the possibility of successful impersonation, confidently stating, "Nobody can impersonate her. There's only one Susie."
The FBI had previously issued a warning regarding malicious actors employing AI to impersonate senior government officials. Director Kash Patel emphasized the priority of securing administration officials' communications.
This incident follows previous security breaches, including one in which Iran gained access to sensitive Trump campaign documents. Authorities are actively investigating the current AI impersonation scam.
