Over 100 prisoners escaped a Karachi jail after an earthquake evacuation. Inmates attacked guards, leading to a shootout. Many have been recaptured.
In Karachi, Pakistan, a precautionary evacuation following earthquake tremors led to a significant security lapse when over 100 inmates escaped from Malir prison.
The prisoners were moved from their cells due to concerns about the earthquakes, but the situation escalated when some prisoners attacked guards, seized weapons, and fled. According to police official Kashif Abbasi, 216 inmates initially escaped, with 78 quickly recaptured. A search is underway for the remaining escapees. Authorities clarified that no militants were among those who fled.
The escape resulted in a shootout that left one inmate dead and three security personnel injured. Home Minister Ziaul Hassan explained that the inmates were moved out of their cells after the earthquake tremors. While outside, some prisoners attacked guards and fled the prison after opening fire. Prison Superintendent Arshad Shah said the escapees fled towards residential areas. Police used mosque loudspeakers to alert residents and request assistance in identifying and reporting the escaped prisoners. Sindh’s chief minister, Murad Ali Shah, urged the escapees to surrender, noting they could face more serious terror charges if apprehended by the police.
Although prison breaks during court transfers occur in Pakistan, mass breakouts from prison walls are rare. Karachi experienced multiple earthquakes within the past 24 hours, ranging from 2.6 to 3.4 magnitude.
