ICRC: Gaza Situation 'Worse Than Hell,' Humanity Failing

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has described the situation in Gaza as "worse than hell on earth," stating that humanity is failing. Mirjana Spoljaric, the ICRC president, expressed deep concern over the immense suffering and destruction, emphasizing that the situation surpasses all acceptable legal, moral, and humane standards. She highlighted the stripping of human dignity and called for immediate action from world leaders to end the war, alleviate the suffering of Palestinians, and secure the release of Israeli hostages.

Adherence to Geneva Conventions

Spoljaric underscored that every state has the right to self-defense, while also stressing that there is no justification for hostage-taking or depriving children of essential resources. She stated that the actions of Hamas on October 7, 2023, do not justify the destruction in Gaza, emphasizing that the Geneva Conventions apply to everyone, and neither party is permitted to violate them.

ICRC's Role and Concerns

The ICRC, a crucial source of information in Gaza, has reported that nowhere in the region is safe, including their own facilities. Their surgical hospital in Rafah has been overwhelmed by casualties, particularly after incidents involving aid distribution. The ICRC president criticized the current aid distribution system, stating it seems ineffective and dangerous.

Call for Ceasefire and Global Responsibility

Spoljaric voiced concerns about talk of "victory at all costs" and dehumanization, warning that the erosion of humanitarian rules could have global repercussions. She urged a ceasefire to preserve the possibility of peace, cautioning that the destruction of this pathway would lead to lasting insecurity. She called on world leaders to act decisively, emphasizing their obligation to help reverse the catastrophic situation in Gaza.
