Greta Thunberg's Gaza-Bound Ship Rescues Migrants in Mediterranean Sea
Climate activist Greta Thunberg, aboard the vessel Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was en route to Gaza with humanitarian aid when the ship responded to a distress signal in the Mediterranean Sea near Crete, Greece.
The Rescue Operation
The vessel, sailing from Sicily, discovered a boat in distress carrying approximately 30-35 people. The Madleen crew launched a rescue boat, encountering a Libyan coastguard vessel. Four Sudanese migrants, fearing capture, jumped into the water.
Greta Thunberg’s ship rescued the migrants. According to a support group, Libya is not considered a safe country for refugees. After several hours, a Frontex vessel picked up the rescued migrants.
Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Mission
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, initiated in 2010, supports Palestinians. The Madleen carries essential supplies for Gaza. Activists, including actor Liam Cunningham and French MEP Rima Hassan, aim to break the blockade and highlight the humanitarian crisis. Hassan was denied entry into Israel for criticizing military actions in Gaza.
