Osaka Expo 2025 suspends water shows and pool area due to high levels of Legionella bacteria. Cleaning and safety checks are underway. No health issues reported
The popular water fountain shows and a shallow pool area at the Osaka Expo 2025 have been temporarily closed due to the detection of high levels of legionella bacteria, prompting immediate cleaning and safety checks.
The aquatic show at the Water Plaza was suspended on June 4 after legionella bacteria levels exceeded legal limits by twentyfold. A week prior, lower levels of contamination were detected. Another water area, the Forest of Tranquility, a 2.3-hectare reservoir where visitors could soak their feet, has also been shut down for cleaning.
This bacterial contamination adds to a list of problems plaguing the Expo site. Previously, swarms of midges had been bothering visitors, and methane gas was detected prior to the April opening. Insecticide use has not been effective in controlling the midges, leading organizers to believe the Water Plaza is the source.
Organizers are implementing several measures to address both the bacterial and midge issues. These include:
Hiroyuki Ishige, secretary general of the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, apologized for the inconvenience caused to visitors and admitted that the organizers should have acted more swiftly.
Despite the contamination, organizers report that there have been no reported health issues among visitors.
The Osaka Expo anticipates welcoming 28 million visitors by mid-October, showcasing futuristic exhibits from over 160 countries, regions, and organizations.
