Ukraine's air force reports the loss of another F-16 fighter jet during combat with Russia. Pilot ejected safely. This is at least the second loss reported.
The Ukrainian Air Force has confirmed the loss of another US-made F-16 fighter jet, marking a significant blow to its air defense capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
According to the air force, contact with the F-16 was lost early Friday during a manoeuvre aimed at repelling a Russian attack. The pilot reportedly destroyed three air targets and was engaging a fourth when an emergency situation arose on board.
The pilot ejected safely, and a commission has been appointed to investigate the cause of the incident.
This incident follows earlier reports of F-16 losses. In August 2024, Kyiv reported that an F-16 crashed while repelling a Russian missile attack, resulting in the pilot's death. In April 2025, Russia claimed to have downed an F-16, although Ukraine did not confirm this, it did acknowledge the death of pilot Pavlo Ivanov during a combat mission.
The loss of another F-16 presents a challenge for Ukraine, which relies on these aircraft to intercept missiles and target Russian warplanes. The country has been counting on the F-16s to bolster its defense capabilities.
Russia continues its offensive, launching a substantial drone attack overnight. Ukraine claims to have downed a significant portion of the drones, while others were lost from radar, though reportedly causing no damage.
