Mount Lewotobi volcano erupted in Indonesia, sending ash 10km high. Flights to/from Bali were canceled. Villages evacuated with no injuries reported.
The Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, situated in eastern Indonesia, experienced a significant eruption, sending a massive ash plume soaring 10 kilometers into the atmosphere.
The event prompted authorities to elevate the alert status to its highest level. This resulted in the cancellation of numerous international and domestic flights, according to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. While the airport remains operational, flight cancellations are occurring based on route and airline decisions. Airlines affected include Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Air India, Air New Zealand, TigerAir, and Juneyao Airlines.
Volcanic ash has fallen on nearby villages, leading to evacuations. As of now, no injuries or significant damage have been reported.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a 1,703-meter twin-peaked volcano on Flores Island, is paired with Lewotobi Perempuan. The volcano has demonstrated increased activity recently, including eruptions in November that caused fatalities and flight disruptions.
Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation and have emergency measures in place.
