A devastating hot air balloon accident in Praia Grande, southern Brazil, has resulted in the deaths of eight people.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning, with 21 people aboard. According to Santa Catarina's governor, Jorginho Mello, 13 individuals, including the pilot, survived.
Initial reports suggest a fire erupted within the balloon's basket, prompting the pilot to initiate an emergency descent. Survivors recounted the pilot's instructions to jump as the balloon neared the ground; however, not all passengers were able to escape before the flames intensified, causing the balloon to ascend again before ultimately crashing.
The victims included couples, a mother and daughter, an ophthalmologist, and a figure skater. Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, the balloon tour operator, has suspended operations and stated compliance with all regulations. Authorities are investigating the cause of the tragedy. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed condolences and pledged federal support to the victims and their families.
