A devastating attack on the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox church in Dweil'a, near Damascus, Syria, has resulted in at least 25 fatalities, according to state media. The bombing, which occurred during a Divine Liturgy, marks a grim milestone as the first such incident in Syria in recent years.

Context of the Attack

The attack comes at a sensitive time, as President Ahmad al-Sharaa's government aims to secure the support of minority groups amidst concerns about extremist sleeper cells. Witnesses reported a gunman opening fire on worshippers before detonating an explosive vest.

The incident also left 63 people injured. Father Fadi Ghattas reported approximately 350 people were present during the prayer service.

International Reaction

International condemnation has poured in from the United States, the European Union, and various Middle Eastern governments, all denouncing the act as terrorism. While no group has claimed responsibility, the Syrian Interior Minister is pointing fingers at the Islamic State group.

The government is striving to ensure the safety of minority groups.
