Lufthansa Flight Drama: Co-pilot Unconscious, Captain Locked Out

A Lufthansa Airbus A321, en route from Frankfurt to Seville with 199 passengers and six crew members, experienced a mid-air emergency. The first officer lost consciousness, leaving the captain temporarily locked out of the cockpit after visiting the lavatory. The incident occurred in February 2024, but details have recently emerged following an investigation.

Pilot Incapacitation and Cockpit Access

According to the captain, the 38-year-old co-pilot was alert before he left for the washroom with 30 minutes of flight time remaining. Upon his return eight minutes later, the captain was unable to regain access, even with the security code. An unanswered intercom call prompted the captain to use an emergency code.

Co-pilot's Recovery and Medical Assistance

Simultaneously, the co-pilot regained consciousness and manually opened the door. The co-pilot was pale, sweating, and acting strangely, prompting the captain to call for help from the cabin crew. A doctor onboard diagnosed a possible heart condition and administered first aid.

Emergency Landing and Medical Diagnosis

The co-pilot recalled flying over Zaragoza before losing consciousness, unable to alert the crew. The captain then diverted the plane to Madrid, the nearest airport. Doctors at a hospital determined the co-pilot's incapacitation was due to a neurological condition, leading to the suspension of his medical certificate.
