Mauritius Drug Bust: British Boy, 6, Detained with £1.6M Cannabis
A six-year-old British boy was detained in Mauritius alongside several adults in connection to a £1.6 million drug trafficking operation.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred last Sunday at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, where authorities discovered 14kg of cannabis hidden in the boy's luggage, part of a larger 161kg haul. The seized drugs were valued at approximately £1.6 million.
The boy's 35-year-old mother and her Romanian companion were also found with concealed packages.
Detention and Legal Proceedings
Five British women, one British man, one Romanian man, and the child were detained. The adults faced provisional drug-related charges in a Mahebourg court.
Consular Assistance and Return
The British High Commission was notified following the arrest of the child and his mother. Reports indicate the boy returned to the UK on Wednesday. Customs officials had been monitoring the group since their arrival on a British Airways flight from London Gatwick.
