UK Government Condemns 'Death to IDF' Chants at Glastonbury Festival

The UK government has voiced strong disapproval of anti-Israel chants and displays during recent performances at the Glastonbury Festival, prompting criticism directed towards both the BBC and festival organizers.

Controversial Performances

Rapper Bobby Vylan ignited controversy by leading crowds in chants of "Death to the IDF," a reference to the Israeli army. Simultaneously, Irish rap group Kneecap faced scrutiny when a member wore a T-shirt in support of the Palestine Action Group, an organization potentially facing a UK terror ban.

Government Response

UK minister Wes Streeting described the broadcast of these chants as "appalling" and called on the BBC and Glastonbury organizers to provide explanations. The Israeli embassy in London also expressed serious concern over the "inflammatory and hateful rhetoric" expressed during the festival.

BBC and Police Investigation

The BBC responded by stating that Vylan's comments were "deeply offensive" and removed the performance from their on-demand services. Avon and Somerset police are currently reviewing video evidence to assess whether any criminal offenses were committed.

Kneecap's Pro-Palestinian Stance

Kneecap, known for their pro-Palestinian stance, also led chants against UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Liam O'Hanna, a member of Kneecap, faces charges for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag, claiming it was a "joke." The band has faced both praise for their anti-establishment views and criticism for perceived extremism.
