Sharanjit Kaur, an Indian-origin woman, was jailed in New Zealand for reckless driving resulting in Jonathan Baker's death after a road rage incident.
Sharanjit Kaur, an Indian-origin woman, has been sentenced to four years in prison in New Zealand after pleading guilty to reckless driving causing the death of Jonathan Baker.
The road rage incident occurred on June 27 of the previous year. The Hamilton District Court handed down the sentence.
Reports indicate that Kaur was triggered by a photograph of her ex-partner with his wife at a restaurant. Driven by rage, Kaur pursued the ex-partner's wife at high speeds, engaging in dangerous driving.
She recklessly drove on the wrong side of Boyd Road, reaching speeds of 125–136 km/h, before colliding with Baker’s vehicle, resulting in his immediate death.
Baker's widow expressed her devastation but also extended forgiveness to Kaur. Baker’s mother-in-law described the incident as incomprehensible and senseless.
Kaur's lawyer acknowledged the pain caused and stated that Kaur accepts full responsibility, attributing her actions to a psychological breakdown triggered by the photograph and a long-term tumultuous relationship. Her plea for home detention was rejected.
