Crete Wildfire: Thousands Evacuated as Blaze Rages Near Ierapetra

A major wildfire in Crete forces thousands to evacuate. The blaze, fueled by strong winds, has caused widespread damage near Ierapetra, Greece.

Crete Wildfire Forces Mass Evacuation

A major wildfire on the Greek island of Crete has forced the evacuation of thousands of people and caused widespread damage to homes and businesses.

Rapid Spread of the Blaze

The blaze, which began on Wednesday afternoon near the village of Achlia, has spread rapidly due to strong winds and high temperatures. According to the fire service, the fire has now split into three active fronts in Achlia, Ferma, and Skinokapsala. Fire crews report that the conditions are creating new flare-ups, making containment efforts extremely difficult.

Evacuation Efforts

Authorities have ordered the mass evacuation of hotels, rental rooms, and homes in the Ferma municipality. Manolis Tzarakis, president of the Ierapetra and Southeast Crete Hoteliers' Association, stated that around 5,000 people have been evacuated, the majority being foreign tourists. At least 200 evacuees are sheltered in a sports hall in Ierapetra.

Resources Deployed

As of Thursday morning, 230 firefighters, supported by 13 specialised foot teams, 46 engines, and a drone surveillance unit, have been deployed. Ten helicopters are also involved in aerial firefighting operations.

Extensive Damage

Authorities report extensive damage, with homes, greenhouses, villas, hotels, and businesses destroyed in coastal and inland areas. In Agia Fotia, homes and rental properties have been destroyed, and the area is experiencing a power outage. At least four elderly people have been hospitalized with respiratory problems caused by smoke inhalation.

Safety Measures

The main road near Agia Fotia has been closed, and residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel. All hospitals in Crete have been placed on alert. Emergency alerts via the 112 public warning system were issued, calling for evacuations from Achlia, Ferma, Agia Fotia, Galini, and Koutsounari.

Regional Context

Earlier this week, wildfires in Turkey led to 50,000 evacuations. Europe is currently experiencing an early summer heatwave, with heat-related deaths reported in Spain, Italy, and France.
