Germany Train Attack: Hammer Assault on Passengers
A high-speed train traveling from Hamburg to Vienna was the scene of a violent hammer attack on Thursday near Straßkirchen, southern Germany.
Details of the Incident
A 20-year-old Syrian man allegedly assaulted passengers on the ICE 91 service, injuring four people. Passengers heroically subdued the suspect before police arrived and took him into custody. He is currently receiving medical treatment.
Authorities initially misidentified the weapon as an axe, but later confirmed it was primarily a hammer. The motive for the attack remains under investigation.
The incident prompted a large emergency response, including helicopters and psychological support teams. The railway line was temporarily shut down, and a care center was established for the approximately 500 passengers on board.
Victims and Response
The injured victims include a 15-year-old boy, two men aged 24 and 51, all of Syrian nationality, and a 38-year-old whose nationality is being determined. All are hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Deutsche Bahn expressed sympathy for those affected by the incident.
