Rome Fuel Depot Explosion: Over 20 Injured
A massive explosion occurred at a fuel depot in the suburbs of Rome on Friday, resulting in injuries to over 20 people, according to the Associated Press.
The Incident
The explosion sent a large fireball into the sky, followed by thick black smoke that spread across the Prenestino area in eastern Rome. Preliminary reports suggest a truck may have crashed into the pipeline shortly after 8 AM, initiating the catastrophic event.
Response and Aftermath
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. Eight police officers were injured, sustaining burns during rescue operations. "There were a few chain explosions after the first one," said police spokesperson Elisabetta Accardo.
Neighboring buildings, including a children's summer camp, were evacuated. Residents described the explosion as feeling 'like an earthquake.' Pope Leo XIV offered prayers, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her support.
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri confirmed the majority of injuries reported were minor. The situation continues to be monitored.
