Hezbollah Rejects Israeli Threats: 'Will Not Surrender'
Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has firmly stated that the group will not surrender or disarm in response to threats from Israel. Addressing supporters in Beirut during the Ashura commemoration, Qassem emphasized Hezbollah's commitment to retaining its weapons until Israel ceases its perceived aggression. This declaration occurs amidst persistent pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah.
Lebanese Government's Position
Lebanese officials have indicated efforts to dismantle Hezbollah's military presence near the Israeli border. A previous ceasefire agreement stipulated Hezbollah's retreat north of the Litani River and Israel's withdrawal from Lebanese territory, although Israel maintains a presence at key strategic locations. Despite the ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes continue in Lebanon, alleging Hezbollah targets and accusing Beirut of inaction.
Hezbollah's Demands
Qassem insisted that Israel must adhere to the ceasefire terms, including withdrawing from Lebanese land, ceasing attacks, releasing prisoners from the previous conflict, and supporting Lebanon's reconstruction, before any national security discussions can proceed. He also dismissed any possibility of normalizing ties with Israel. The US envoy, Tom Barrack, is scheduled to visit Beirut soon.
Ashura Procession and Regional Response
During the Ashura procession, Hezbollah supporters marched through Beirut, displaying various flags and posters of Hassan Nasrallah. The Lebanese government has not commented on the normalization proposal, while Syria deemed such discussions premature.
