Nepal-China Border Floods: Death Toll Rises
Torrential monsoon rains have caused severe flash floods in the Himalayan valley between Nepal and China. At least one death has been confirmed, and many people are still missing.
Key Bridge Destroyed
The Bhotekoshi River overflowed, sweeping away a crucial bridge that connected Nepal and China. This happened near the border early in the morning.
Rescue Operation in Rasuwa
Nine people stranded in the Rasuwa district were successfully rescued after the Lhende stream flooded near the Nepal-China border. Authorities confirm 22 people are now in shelters, while efforts continue to locate the remaining missing individuals.
Cross-border Impact
Nepal’s NDRRMA reports 17 people missing on the Nepal side, including 11 Nepalis and 6 Chinese nationals. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported 11 missing on their side in addition to the six construction workers swept away in Nepal.
Climate Change Warning
Experts attribute the increasing severity of monsoon-related disasters to climate change. The ICIMOD warned of the heightened risks of water-induced calamities due to rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns. The UN's WMO also described the floods and droughts as a "distress signal" of a rapidly changing water cycle.
