Marseille Wildfire: Firefighters Battle Blaze
A major wildfire is threatening Marseille, France, prompting a significant response from firefighters and authorities.
Intense Battle Against the Flames
Thousands of firefighters are working to contain the wildfire that has reached the outer edge of Marseille, France's second-largest city. Mayor Benoît Payan characterized the effort as a fierce battle, stating, "The marine firefighter battalion is waging guerrilla warfare, hoses in hand."
Evacuations and Safety Measures
Local residents have been urged to remain indoors as firefighters work to defend the city. Approximately 400 people have been evacuated from their homes. Nine firefighters have been reported injured while combating the blaze. The fire spread at an alarming rate due to a combination of strong winds, dense vegetation, and steep slopes.
National Response
French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed support for the firefighters and urged residents to follow safety instructions. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to arrive in Marseille. Marseille Provence airport has partially reopened after being closed since midday due to the fire.
Fire Origins and Impact
The fire, which started near Pennes-Mirabeau, north of Marseille, has consumed approximately 700 hectares. Local authorities believe a car fire on the motorway sparked the blaze.
Wider European Wildfires
France isn't the only country affected as other wildfires are active near Narbonne, Spain and Greece, impacting thousands and prompting evacuations.
