Gaza Airstrikes Kill Dozens Amid Ceasefire Efforts, Trump Talks with Netanyahu
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 40 Palestinians, including 10 members of one family, according to hospital officials. The strikes occurred amidst efforts by US President Donald Trump to broker a ceasefire.
Ceasefire Efforts and Negotiations
Trump engaged in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House for the second time in two days, yet a breakthrough remains elusive. Netanyahu insists on continuing the war until Hamas is eliminated, while Hamas demands a lasting ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for the remaining hostages.
Casualties and Healthcare Crisis
The Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis reported that 17 women and 10 children were among the dead. Gaza's healthcare system is severely strained, with hospitals rendered inoperable and medical professionals killed in the strikes. The Israeli military claims to have targeted over 100 locations in Gaza, including militant hideouts and weapons facilities, accusing Hamas of operating within civilian areas.
Humanitarian Crisis
Civilians are struggling to obtain basic necessities like food and water. Aid organizations cite Israeli restrictions and lawlessness as impediments to delivering humanitarian aid, leading to widespread hunger. Abeer al-Najjar, residing in the Muwasi area, described the struggle to feed her family amidst the ongoing bombardments. Her husband, Ali al-Najjar, highlighted the severe water scarcity, especially during the summer months.
Background and Ongoing Conflict
The conflict, which began after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 57,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Trump maintains that progress is being made toward a ceasefire and hostage deal. Steve Witkoff, Trump's Mideast envoy, is expected to travel to Doha for indirect negotiations with Hamas. Discussions focus on Israel's demand to maintain a military presence in Gaza during a potential truce.
