Gaza: Children Killed in Israeli Strike While Queuing for Supplements, Hospital Reports
A devastating Israeli strike near a medical point in central Gaza has reportedly killed at least 15 Palestinians, including eight children and two women.
The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital stated that the strike hit people in Deir al-Balah who were waiting for nutritional supplements. Graphic footage from the hospital depicted the bodies of children and the wounded receiving treatment. The Israeli military has stated that it is investigating the reports.
Ceasefire Negotiations Ongoing
Separately, another 26 individuals were allegedly killed in strikes across Gaza on Thursday. These events coincide with ongoing negotiations in Doha between Israeli and Hamas delegations aimed at establishing a new ceasefire and securing the release of hostages.
Despite US-led mediation efforts with Qatar and Egypt, a breakthrough has yet to be achieved. A senior Israeli official suggested that reaching an agreement could take one to two weeks.
Hamas Responds
Hamas, however, has described the talks as difficult, accusing Israel of "intransigence." They reiterated their desire for a comprehensive agreement that would end the Israeli offensive, despite showing flexibility in agreeing to release 10 hostages.
Context of the Conflict
The Israeli military operation in Gaza was initiated in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and 251 hostages. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, at least 57,680 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the operation. A vast majority of Gaza's population has been displaced, with widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and essential services.
