Tragic Death of Colombian Model María José Estupiñán

María José Estupiñán Sánchez, a 22-year-old Colombian model and social media influencer, was tragically murdered outside her residence in Cúcuta. The shocking incident occurred on the morning of May 15.

Details of the Attack

The brutal killing took place just one day after a court ordered her ex-partner to provide compensation related to a longstanding domestic violence case. According to eyewitness accounts, the attacker approached around 8:30 am, posing as a delivery person. He presented himself as if delivering a gift, then shot María José in the face and chest at close range as she opened the door.

Surveillance cameras captured the harrowing event and the suspect's subsequent escape, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing police investigation.

Witness Accounts and Aftermath

News reports indicate that María José's mother was present during the shooting and likely witnessed the crime. The mother's screams were recorded and shared on social media, leading to significant public outcry and condemnation.

The murder occurred shortly after María José attended a hearing where she was formally acknowledged as a victim in a domestic violence case filed in 2018. Her ex-partner had been ordered to pay her 30 million Colombian pesos (approximately $7,120).

Investigation and Response

Authorities are investigating the case as a potential femicide, with the ex-boyfriend being the primary suspect. Alejandra Vera, from the Women’s Denounce and Move Corporation, stated that María José had sought help and activated protective measures from the state.

The Francisco de Paula Santander University, where María José was a student, issued a statement condemning the violence and mourning the loss of a young woman with a promising future.

Remembering María José

Her funeral was held on May 17, and many people gathered to mourn her death. The circumstances of her murder are being compared to that of Mexican influencer Valeria Márquez, who was killed just days earlier under similar circumstances, highlighting the escalating issue of gender-based violence in Latin America.

Police Commander Colonel Leonardo Capacho has stated that efforts to apprehend the suspect are progressing. The investigation remains active.
