Afghanistan Jolted by 4.2 Magnitude Earthquake
Early Monday, Afghanistan experienced a 4.2 magnitude earthquake, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). This marks the fourth earthquake to hit the region in the past four days.
Earthquake Details
The earthquake occurred at approximately 08.54 am IST, originating at a depth of 140 kilometers. The NCS reported the epicenter's location at 36.41 N latitude and 70.94 E longitude.
Recent Seismic Activity
This event follows a series of recent earthquakes in Afghanistan, including a 4.5-magnitude earthquake on Sunday. Two earlier earthquakes occurred on May 17th and 16th, highlighting the region's increased seismic activity.
Expert Insights
Experts suggest that deeper earthquakes, like the one experienced today, are generally less dangerous. This is because the seismic waves lose energy as they travel a greater distance to the earth's surface.
Afghanistan's Vulnerability
Afghanistan's geographical location, situated on several fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, makes it particularly susceptible to earthquakes. The Hindu Kush region is known for its frequent seismic activity. According to the United Nations (UNOCHA), Afghanistan faces significant vulnerability to natural disasters, including seasonal flooding, landslides, and earthquakes, exacerbating challenges faced by communities already struggling with conflict and underdevelopment.
