Swedish Leaders' Locations Exposed by Bodyguards' Fitness App Data

A Swedish investigation found bodyguards using Strava exposed locations of leaders, including PM Ulf Kristersson, through shared workout routes.

Swedish Leaders' Locations Compromised by Fitness App Data

A recent investigation by a Swedish newspaper has uncovered a potential security vulnerability. Bodyguards protecting members of the Swedish Royal Family and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson inadvertently revealed sensitive locations by sharing workout routes on the fitness app Strava.

The Strava App and Security Concerns

The popular fitness app Strava allows users to map and share their movements, creating a global social media community. However, this feature has raised concerns about data privacy, particularly when used by security personnel.

Data Exposed by Bodyguards

Dagens Nyheter, a Swedish daily newspaper, tracked over 1,400 workouts by seven bodyguards over the past year. This data revealed:

  • The address of the Prime Minister's private residence.
  • A high-level, unannounced meeting in Norway between Kristersson and leaders of Norway and Finland in June 2024.
  • Training locations in the Alps, near Ukraine's border with Poland, and at a military base in Mali.

Official Response

Sweden's security police have confirmed the data is linked to some of their employees and are investigating the potential impact of the exposed information. A Strava spokesperson stated that there has been no user data breach.
