Donald Trump announces a 25% tariff on India starting August 1st, plus a 'penalty' for trade relations with Russia, citing unfair trade practices.
Former President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on goods from India, set to take effect on August 1st.
In addition to the tariff, Trump indicated that India would face an unspecified "penalty" due to what he considers unfair trade practices and its continued trade with Russia, particularly in military equipment and energy.
Trump expressed his concerns on Truth Social, highlighting the historically high tariffs imposed by India and its "strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers."
He also criticized India's reliance on Russia for military supplies and energy, especially amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The 25% tariff is slightly less than the 26% rate previously imposed on India.
