Russia Launches Deadly Missile and Drone Attack on Kyiv
In a devastating overnight attack, Russia targeted Ukraine's capital city, Kyiv, with missiles and drones. The assault resulted in at least eight fatalities, including a 6-year-old boy, and left 82 others injured, according to Ukrainian officials.
Details of the Attack
Ten children, including a 5-month-old girl, were among the injured. A significant portion of a nine-story residential building collapsed after being struck. Rescue teams are currently on-site, searching for individuals trapped beneath the rubble.
Air Defense and Counterclaims
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 309 Shahed and decoy drones, along with eight Iskander-K cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 288 strike drones and three missiles, but five missiles and 21 drones still managed to hit their targets. Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down 32 Ukrainian drones overnight. There are also reports of a drone attack causing a fire at an industrial site in Russia's Penza region.
Ongoing Conflict in Eastern Ukraine
Fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, with Russia claiming full control of the strategically important city of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region. Ukraine denies this claim. President Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that it demonstrates Russia's response to Ukraine's pursuit of peace.
Impact Across Regions
The attack impacted multiple regions including Kyiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Sumy and Mykolaiv, causing damage to over 100 buildings in Kyiv alone, including residential properties, schools, and hospitals.
