Pacific Tsunami Alerts Lifted After Major Earthquake Near Russia
A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific, leading to evacuations in Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and other coastal regions.
While waves reached 1.7m in Maui and 1.09m in Crescent City, California, the expected widespread devastation did not materialize. Tsunami warnings were subsequently downgraded or lifted as the threat receded.
Although some areas experienced minor flooding and strong currents, significant damage and injuries were largely avoided. The earthquake, one of the strongest ever recorded in the region, caused a temporary shutdown of a nuclear plant, and prompted officials in affected areas to urge caution as residents returned to their homes.
