The Trump administration halts $108M in Duke University research funding, citing racial discrimination in admissions and hiring practices.
The Trump administration has suspended $108 million in federal research funding to Duke University, accusing the institution of engaging in racial discrimination through affirmative action policies. Officials allege that Duke's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices amount to unlawful racial preferences in hiring and admissions.
A joint letter from the Departments of Health and Human Services and Education described the alleged practices as "vile racism." The administration demands that Duke establish a federally-approved merit and civil rights committee to eliminate race-based practices.
The Education Department is also investigating the Duke Law Journal for allegedly favoring prospective editors from underrepresented groups.
Other universities, including Harvard and Columbia, are also under scrutiny for their DEI practices. The administration views these practices as discriminatory against white and Asian American individuals.
Duke relies on federal sources for nearly 60% of its $1.5 billion annual research budget. University officials previously announced 600 voluntary buyouts due to funding uncertainty and higher endowment taxes.
Columbia University recently agreed to policy revisions and a $200 million payment to maintain federal funding.
Duke has not yet commented on the allegations or funding suspension.
