An investigation has determined that the drowning of 9-year-old Sophia Subedi at Hersheypark's Boardwalk was an accident. Derry Township Police found no evidence of foul play or negligence by Hersheypark.
Sophia Subedi, a girl of Bhutanese origin, was found in distress in the wave pool on July 24th. Lifeguards responded immediately, administering CPR. She was then taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, but was later pronounced dead.
Police reviewed video footage, witness statements, and safety documentation. Their investigation confirmed that Hersheypark maintained proper safety standards, and the wave pool was not overcrowded. According to park officials, there were 100 lifeguards present at the Boardwalk, with 10 lifeguards specifically assigned to the wave pool.
"It was also noted that nearby witnesses and lifeguards responded promptly, initiating rescue and resuscitation efforts within seconds of noticing Sophia's distress," a Derry Township Police spokesperson wrote.
Sophia's funeral was held in Harrisburg on July 30th. She previously lived in Columbus, Ohio, and was a student at North Side Elementary School in Harrisburg. A GoFundMe page has been created to support her family.
