Cambodian Sleeper Bus Plunges into River, 13 Confirmed Dead
A tragic incident unfolded in Cambodia early on November 20, as a sleeper bus carrying passengers from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh veered off O’ Prasat bridge and plunged into a river in Kampong Thom province. The devastating accident, occurring around 4 AM local time (5 AM Singapore time), has resulted in the confirmed deaths of at least 13 individuals.
Rescue Efforts and Casualties
Police and rescue teams quickly responded to the scene in Chey Chumnas village, Kakoh commune, Sandan district. Over 20 people were successfully pulled from the deep waters, which were estimated to be around 5 meters (16 feet) deep. However, the grim search continues for more than 10 individuals who remain missing, intensifying fears that the casualty count could rise.
A Sandan district policeman confirmed the 13 victims were found deceased inside the submerged bus. Local authorities are actively gathering information, while ambulances transported the survivors to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Investigating the Cause
Preliminary investigations suggest that driver fatigue may have been a critical factor in the catastrophe. A former commune police officer indicated that the bus likely collided with the right-side bridge barrier after the driver potentially fell asleep at the wheel, leading to its catastrophic descent into the water. Authorities have confirmed no other vehicles were involved in the collision.
Community Impact and Aftermath
The scene was described as heartbreaking by responders, particularly as the bus was recovered with bodies still trapped inside. The deceased have since been transferred to the nearby Kakoh pagoda as the community grapples with the aftermath of this profound loss.
