Poland's ambassador to South Korea expressed deep concerns over North Korea's support for Russia in the Ukraine war, advocating direct communication with Pyongy
Polish Ambassador Bartosz Wisniewski expressed significant apprehension regarding North Korea's involvement in Russia's ongoing conflict against Ukraine. During a recent meeting with South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young in Seoul, Ambassador Wisniewski underscored the critical need for maintaining direct communication with Pyongyang.
The ambassador highlighted the increasingly intertwined security landscape, linking the Korean Peninsula, Central Europe, and the "eastern flank." Poland, due to its shared border with Ukraine, has become a pivotal gateway for military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv. This proximity has consequently exposed Poland to escalating security threats stemming from the conflict.
"We are crystal clear that the DPRK's involvement in the brutal war and aggression against Ukraine is a source of great concerns to us," stated Ambassador Wisniewski, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The discussions acknowledged North Korea's growing alignment with Russia across military and other sectors. Reports indicate that since last year, Pyongyang has reportedly sent approximately 15,000 troops and various weapons to support Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
Ambassador Wisniewski strongly emphasized the "crucial importance" of establishing and maintaining a direct channel of communication with the DPRK. He posited that such a direct line could not only facilitate a clearer understanding of the evolving situation on the ground but also potentially lay the groundwork for a future resumption of dialogue between North and South Korea.
Minister Chung Dong-young concurred, recognizing that both South Korea and Poland face significant security ramifications due to North Korea's actions in the Russia-Ukraine war. He stressed their mutual commitment to peace and the imperative for enhanced cooperation and solidarity between the two nations to effectively address these complex challenges.
