Central Vietnam is grappling with the devastating aftermath of torrential rains, widespread flooding, and severe landslides that have claimed at least 55 lives. The country's disaster agency reported on November 22 that an additional 13 individuals remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue.
Unprecedented Rainfall Devastates Region
Over the past week, parts of central Vietnam experienced extraordinary rainfall, with some areas recording more than 1,900mm. This region, vital for its coffee production and renowned for its tourist beaches, is unfortunately no stranger to the perils of storms and floods.
Provinces Bear the Brunt of Casualties
The fatalities are concentrated in specific provinces, with Dak Lak province bearing the brunt of the tragedy, accounting for 27 deaths. Khanh Hoa province has also been severely impacted, reporting 14 lives lost.
Economic & Agricultural Impact
The economic repercussions of this natural calamity are substantial. Government estimates place the cost to the economy at approximately 8.98 trillion dong (equivalent to S$446 million). The physical damage is equally vast, with over 235,000 homes submerged and nearly 80,000 hectares of crucial crops destroyed by the floodwaters.
As the region begins to assess the full extent of the devastation, the focus remains on recovery and supporting the affected communities.
