A Sun Ferry vessel crashed into Hong Kong's Central Pier No. 5, damaging the structure. Police report loss of control during docking. All passengers disembarked
A Sun Ferry vessel recently experienced a collision with Hong Kong's Central Pier No. 5 while attempting to dock, leading to structural damage at the vital transportation hub. The incident, which occurred on a Sunday morning, has prompted immediate action from authorities, who have demanded a comprehensive investigation report from the ferry operator.
The collision was initially reported to the police at 9:33 AM by a passer-by. The three-deck "Xin Chao" ferry, which was arriving from Cheung Chau, struck Pier No. 5. Preliminary findings from the police investigation indicate that the vessel failed to stop in time and lost control during its berthing maneuver. This resulted in the ferry hitting a railing measuring 1 meter by 2.5 meters (approximately three by 8.2 feet), the staircase parapet, and a portion of the shore's roof structure.
Despite the considerable impact, all passengers on board were able to safely disembark from the vessel and leave the pier without any reported injuries. The observable damage included a broken staircase railing and another section that was noticeably bent, with debris scattered across the ground following the collision.
The Transport Department has officially requested that Sun Ferry submit a detailed report outlining the precise cause of the accident. Furthermore, the department has stressed the importance of ensuring that the incident does not disrupt the crucial ferry services, which are indispensable for daily commuters and visitors in Hong Kong.
