Peace talks for the Russia-Ukraine war advance, with US optimism. Intense drone and shelling attacks hit Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk, while Ukraine secures Rafal
Recent diplomatic discussions in Geneva have reportedly yielded significant progress towards a resolution for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed a strong sense of optimism, stating that an agreement could be achieved "very soon." These talks, focusing on a 28-point peace plan championed by US President Donald Trump, specifically delved into the critical role of NATO and the provision of security guarantees for Ukraine. Andriy Yermak, who led the Ukrainian delegation, echoed Rubio's positive sentiments, affirming that the participants are actively "moving forward to the just and lasting peace Ukrainian people deserve."
The diplomatic progress followed earlier remarks from President Trump on Truth Social, where he criticized Ukraine for a perceived lack of gratitude regarding US efforts and noted Europe's continued purchases of oil from Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promptly responded on X, expressing profound gratitude to the United States and to President Trump personally for the vital assistance that has been "saving Ukrainian lives." Zelenskyy later confirmed his belief that Trump’s team in Geneva was receptive to Ukraine’s perspectives, with talks expected to continue. US media outlet CBS also reported on a potential visit by Zelenskyy to the United States for direct talks with Trump, contingent on the outcomes of the Geneva discussions.
European leaders offered differing perspectives on the conflict and support for Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the European Union's unwavering commitment to providing financial aid to Ukraine and expressed confidence in Zelenskyy's ongoing efforts to combat corruption. Macron underscored that Kyiv’s journey toward EU membership would necessitate substantial rule of law reforms. In stark contrast, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban controversially accused EU leaders of deliberately prolonging the war, describing the continuous support for Kyiv as "just crazy" and asserting that Ukraine has "no chance" of achieving victory.
Amidst the diplomatic efforts, the reality on the ground remained grim, marked by intense fighting and severe attacks. A "massive" Russian drone attack tragically struck Kharkiv, Ukraine, resulting in four fatalities and leaving 12 individuals wounded, including two children aged 11 and 12. The Dnipropetrovsk region also endured a "difficult day," suffering repeated Russian drone and shelling attacks that claimed the lives of a 42-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, and wounded at least five others. In the Zaporizhia region, a 40-year-old man was killed by Russian shelling while working in a field, highlighting the pervasive danger civilians face.
Ukraine retaliated with a drone attack on Russia's Shatura Power Station, located approximately 120km (75 miles) east of the Kremlin. The attack ignited a fire and temporarily disrupted heating for thousands of residents before services were eventually restored. Moscow’s Vnukovo international airport faced temporary restrictions after three Ukrainian drones reportedly targeting the capital were shot down. Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk characterized an explosion on a Polish railway line—a vital route for aid deliveries to Ukraine, including weapons—as an "unprecedented act of sabotage," pledging a full investigation to find those responsible.
The conflict also continued to impact global markets. Oil prices experienced a fall as loading activities resumed at Russia's key Novorossiysk export hub on the Black Sea, following a two-day suspension caused by a Ukrainian attack. In a significant boost to Ukraine’s defense capabilities, Kyiv and France formalized an agreement in Paris for Ukraine to acquire up to 100 Rafale fighter jets over the next decade. This deal was signed during a meeting between President Zelenskyy and President Macron, underscoring continued international support for Ukraine's military modernization.
