Born in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, in 1940, Byeon Ung-jeon embarked on his remarkable broadcasting journey in 1963, starting as an announcer for KBS. His talent quickly shone through, leading to him being scouted by MBC in 1969. It was at MBC where he truly became a household name, captivating audiences with his exceptional hosting skills. The 1970s and 1980s marked the zenith of his broadcasting fame, with popular programs such as MBC's "Cheerful Sports Day" becoming staple viewing across the country.

In 1995, Byeon transitioned from the bright lights of television to the intricate world of politics. He began his political career as a spokesman for the United Liberal Democrats party, quickly demonstrating the same charisma and articulate communication that defined his broadcasting career. His dedication and public appeal led to his election to the National Assembly in 1996. His constituents re-elected him twice more, allowing him to serve three terms in total.

During his time in the 18th National Assembly, he held several pivotal roles, notably serving as the chairman of the Health, Welfare and Family Committee, where he made significant contributions to public policy. His final prominent political engagement was in 2011, when he took on the leadership of the Liberty Forward Party.
