Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi and former US President Donald Trump discussed China relations and Taiwan following Takaichi's controversial remarks. Beijing reacted
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently held a significant telephone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump, focusing primarily on the intricate dynamics of China relations. This high-level discussion comes after Takaichi's earlier remarks regarding Taiwan ignited a major diplomatic confrontation with Beijing, leading to a travel boycott against Japan by China.
The controversy stemmed from Takaichi's statement in parliament this month, where she suggested that a hypothetical Chinese aggression towards Taiwan could provoke a military response from Japan. Beijing, which considers Taiwan an integral part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force for its reunification, reacted with fury to these comments. Taiwan's government, conversely, staunchly rejects Beijing's claims, asserting that only its 23 million people have the right to determine their own future.
In a separate development just prior to Takaichi's call, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly conveyed to Trump that Taiwan's "return to China" is a cornerstone of Beijing's vision for the global order, as reported by Xinhua news agency. Trump, however, chose to highlight progress in trade talks following his call with Xi, making no public mention of Taiwan discussions on his Truth Social platform.
Following her own conversation with Trump, Prime Minister Takaichi informed reporters that the former U.S. President offered a brief overview of current U.S.-China relations. She refrained from disclosing further specifics but noted Trump's friendly demeanor, stating he considered them "extremely good friends" and would welcome her calls at any time. The White House has not yet commented on the details of their discussion.
Echoing Taiwan's firm stance, Premier Cho Jung-tai reiterated on Tuesday that a "return" to China is unequivocally not an option for the island's populace. Meanwhile, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara emphasized the critical importance of stable U.S.-China relations for global stability, including Japan. He chose not to comment on the specific remarks reportedly made by Xi Jinping to Trump concerning Taiwan.
