Beirut Mourns Slain Hezbollah Commander Amid Escalation Fears

The southern suburbs of Beirut recently witnessed a somber and defiant outpouring of grief as hundreds gathered to mourn Haytham Ali Tabtabai, Hezbollah's prominent military commander, and four fellow fighters. Their deaths stemmed from an Israeli airstrike on the city's outskirts, an event that has ignited fears of renewed hostilities in the region.

The targeted killing, an operation that has become less common since a ceasefire was brokered last year, occurred just a day after Lebanon celebrated its Independence Day. This timing has exacerbated anxieties regarding a potential escalation in the long-standing conflict with Israel.

During the extensive funeral procession, which wound its way through various neighborhoods, fervent chants resonated against both Israel and the United States. Mourners vocally rejected calls to disarm Hezbollah, a key demand outlined in the 2024 ceasefire agreement, declaring, "We will not leave our weapons, we will not leave our land!" While senior political figures from Hezbollah were visibly present, the attendance of military officials remained unconfirmed.

Targeting Hezbollah's Evolving Leadership

The US-brokered ceasefire in November 2024 aimed to halt a year-long conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. This earlier confrontation was ignited by Hezbollah's rocket attacks on Israeli positions, which followed the October 7, 2023, assault by its Palestinian ally, Hamas. In the preceding conflict, Israel successfully eliminated Hezbollah's then-leader Hassan Nasrallah, his anticipated successor, and a significant portion of the group's senior military command.

Haytham Tabtabai, 57, rapidly ascended through Hezbollah's ranks, stepping into crucial roles left vacant by these fallen commanders. According to both the Israeli military and Lebanese security sources, he was appointed the group's leading military official and held a position on its influential Jihad Council, responsible for all military operations, following the truce. A Lebanese security source indicated that Israel now appears to be systematically targeting the organization's "next generation" of leaders, having already decimated much of its founding command. A Western diplomat working on Lebanese affairs described Israel's strategy as "peeling them off layer by layer."

Persistent Surveillance and Enforcement

Despite the ceasefire, Israel has maintained a consistent pattern of near-daily strikes on Lebanon. These operations reportedly target Hezbollah's alleged weapons depots, fighters, and efforts to rebuild its infrastructure. The intensity of these strikes has noticeably increased in recent weeks.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning, stating, "Anyone who raises his hand against Israel — his hand will be cut off." He further emphasized, "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I are determined to continue the policy of maximum enforcement in Lebanon and everywhere."

Intelligence gathering remains a critical component of Israel's strategy. Lebanese security sources confirmed that Israeli surveillance drones continue to operate over Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the eastern Bekaa Valley. These advanced capabilities have raised significant concerns among Hezbollah's supporters. Malek Ayoub, a retired military analyst, even suggested on Hezbollah's Al Manar television that Israel might be leveraging facial recognition technology, powered by artificial intelligence, to identify Hezbollah figures from media coverage of Tabtabai's funeral, thereby expanding its target database.
