Beijing has issued a stark warning to Washington, urging the United States to actively curb Japan's actions and prevent any perceived revival of militaristic tendencies. This call comes directly from an editorial published in the People's Daily, the official newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party, as a war of words intensifies between Beijing and Tokyo concerning Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks on Taiwan.
Diplomatic Maneuvers and Speculation
Analysts are speculating intensely about a series of high-level diplomatic engagements. Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent conversation with US President Donald Trump on November 24th, followed by Trump's subsequent call with Japan's Sanae Takaichi the very next day, suggests that Beijing might have pressed Washington to intervene and de-escalate the burgeoning hostilities.
The diplomatic friction ignited after Ms. Takaichi's statement to parliament on November 7th, where she suggested that a hypothetical Chinese invasion of Taiwan could potentially trigger a military response from Tokyo.
Beijing's Historical Context and Current Concerns
The People's Daily editorial, published under the significant pen name "Zhong Sheng" (meaning "Voice of China"), explicitly stated, "China and the United States share a common responsibility to jointly safeguard the post-war international order and oppose any attempts or actions to revive militarism." This sentiment powerfully underscored a shared historical adversary during World War Two: Japan.
The editorial further asserted that the communication between the Chinese and US leaders held "significant practical implications," emphasizing that Ms. Takaichi's comments had "raised concern and vigilance in the international community regarding Japan's dangerous strategic moves."
Trump's Role and Taiwan's Importance
Reuters sources from the Japanese government confirmed that Mr. Trump, during his call with Ms. Takaichi, advised her to avoid further escalation with China. Despite inquiries, Ms. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, refrained from confirming whether President Xi had specifically asked President Trump for intervention during a regular news conference on November 26th.
Adding to the complexity, the People's Daily reported that Mr. Trump had conveyed to Mr. Xi the US's understanding of Taiwan's paramount importance to China.
