Donald Trump announced South Africa's exclusion from the 2026 G20 Summit in Miami and halted US subsidies, citing human rights abuses against white communities.
US President Donald Trump made a significant diplomatic move on Wednesday, announcing that South Africa would be barred from the 2026 G20 Summit in Miami, Florida. Citing alleged human rights abuses and the targeting of white communities under state policies, Trump also declared an immediate halt to all US payments and subsidies to the African nation.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump explicitly directed, "At my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year." He further elaborated on the US's previous decision to skip the G20 summit, accusing the South African government of neglecting "horrific Human Right Abuses endured by Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers." He starkly added, "To put it more bluntly, they are killing white people, and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them."
The punitive measures extended beyond G20 exclusion. Trump asserted that "South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere," and consequently, all financial assistance from the US would cease "effective immediately." He also referenced a perceived snub at the recent G20 closing ceremony, where South Africa allegedly "refused to hand off the G20 Presidency to a Senior Representative from our US Embassy."
Reacting to the announcement, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed regret, branding Trump's actions as punitive and based on misinformation. Ramaphosa's office clarified that the G20 Presidency instruments were lawfully transferred to a US Embassy official, reaffirming South Africa's status as a committed founding member of the G20. The presidential statement highlighted persistent efforts to mend diplomatic ties with the US and condemned the continued imposition of "punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions about our country."
South Africa firmly reiterated its sovereignty and right to participate in global forums, stating, "South Africa is a sovereign constitutional democratic country and does not appreciate insults from another country about its worth in participating in global platforms." The nation vowed to continue its full participation in the G20, urging other member states to uphold principles of equality and collective cooperation.
This latest diplomatic rift exacerbates existing tensions between Washington and Pretoria, particularly regarding South Africa's land reform policies, which Trump has consistently portrayed as a threat to white farmers. These claims, alleging discrimination against the white minority, have been widely criticized by experts and vehemently denied by the South African government. The 2025 G20 Summit, hosted by South Africa in Johannesburg, had championed themes of multilateral cooperation and economic recovery for the Global South, aiming to position Pretoria as a voice for developing nations. Trump's actions, coming shortly after this summit, deliver a significant blow to these efforts and deepen the divide between the two nations.
