Former PM Aide Detained by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Amid Bribery Allegations
Malaysia's anti-corruption body, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), has taken a former senior political aide to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim into custody. Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who recently stepped down from his role as Anwar's senior political secretary this week, was detained following questioning by MACC officers on Friday, November 28, 2025, as part of an ongoing bribery investigation.
Extended Custody Sought for Aide and Businessman
MACC Chief Commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the detention, stating that the agency plans to seek a court order on Saturday to extend Akin's custody beyond the initial 24-hour period. This move signals the MACC's intent to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations.
Simultaneously, businessman Albert Tei, from Sabah, was also brought in for questioning on Friday and is likewise subject to a request for extended detention. Tei has publicly accused Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin of bribery, making him a central figure in the probe. The MACC's investigation will delve into these claims.
Swift Investigation Promised
Chief Commissioner Azam Baki emphasized the agency's commitment to expediting the process, instructing his officers to complete the investigation within the current week. The findings will then be forwarded to the attorney general's chambers for a prompt decision regarding potential charges or offenses. The specific nature of the possible charges has not yet been disclosed.
