Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has maintained a strict nationwide ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol. This prohibition has inadvertently fueled a substantial black market, where bootleg alcohol, often adulterated with harmful substances, poses significant public health risks. The recent fatalities underscore the ongoing challenges authorities face in curbing this dangerous trade.

State news agency IRNA reported the incident, citing a local medical official who confirmed the deaths and poisonings occurred within a 24-hour period ending November 29. Police in Iranshahr quickly identified and apprehended the three individuals believed to be involved in distributing the contaminated alcohol.

Context and Prior Incidents

While the majority of Iran's population is subject to the alcohol ban, non-Muslim religious minorities, such as Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians, are granted exceptions, provided their consumption remains private.

This incident is not isolated. The dangers of illicit alcohol are a recurring concern in Iran. Just last week, Iranian footballer Armin Sohrabian faced suspension after a video reportedly showed him with an alcoholic drink. Furthermore, in a stark warning against illegal distribution, four individuals were executed in October 2024 for their role in selling contaminated bootleg alcohol that led to 17 deaths the previous year.
