Beijing Commends Hong Kong's Swift Fire Response Amid Tragedy
The devastating Tai Po fire in Hong Kong, an incident that tragically claimed 128 lives, injured 79, and left 150 individuals unaccounted for by Sunday, has elicited significant attention and commendation from Chinese state media.
Xinhua, recognized for reflecting Beijing's official government stance, released its inaugural editorial commentary on the tragedy. In it, the agency specifically praised the Hong Kong government's prompt and vigorous rescue and relief operations.
Unity and Leadership Highlighted
Issued on Sunday, the commentary from Xinhua underscored the remarkable unity demonstrated by the city in the wake of the disaster. It urged Hong Kong residents to collectively move forward and overcome the profound impact of the tragedy.
A notable point in the editorial was the explicit recognition of Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu's leadership, whom Xinhua referred to as "the first person-in-charge" for Hong Kong. This editorial represents the only commentary released by a central Chinese news agency concerning the horrific Wang Fuk Court blaze, which first broke out on Wednesday.

Xinhua’s statement emphasized a coordinated and robust response to the catastrophe, stating: "Following the fire, the central government attached great importance to the situation, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government responded with all its might, and all sectors of society extended a helping hand, rapidly mobilising a powerful force for disaster relief."
