Indian airports were plunged into disarray on December 4th as IndiGo, the nation's largest airline, cancelled more than 1,200 flights, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. This widespread disruption, which has persisted since December 1st, has drawn the attention of India's aviation watchdog, which has launched an investigation.

Unraveling the Causes of the Chaos

IndiGo attributed the significant operational challenges to a confluence of factors. Foremost among these are new crew rostering rules implemented in November. These regulations aim to enhance passenger safety by mandating longer rest periods for pilots and cabin crew. While beneficial for long-term safety, the immediate implementation appears to have had a "negative compounding impact" on the airline's schedule.

Beyond the new rules, the carrier also cited "unforeseen operational challenges," including technical glitches and adverse weather conditions, as contributing factors to the cancellations and numerous delays. By December 3rd, the airline confirmed 1,232 cancellations, though the exact number of delayed flights remained undisclosed.

Passenger Outcry and Regulatory Scrutiny

The ripple effect of these cancellations was immediate and severe. Frustrated passengers took to social media, describing "complete mayhem" at airports, with some experiencing delays of up to eight hours and a noticeable absence of staff to assist them. In response, IndiGo stated it is actively working to restore services, offering affected customers alternative travel arrangements or full refunds.

This incident marks another setback for IndiGo, a no-frills carrier that has largely built its brand on a reputation for punctuality. Just last week, the airline saw 200 of its aircraft affected by an urgent upgrade alert issued by Airbus for 6,000 planes globally.

The country's airports recorded an unprecedented 500,000 daily fliers for the first time in November, underscoring the immense demand in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.
