Transmission Gully Northbound Lane Closure Postponed for Kāpiti Food Fair

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has announced a change to its planned roadworks schedule this weekend, opting to keep the northbound lanes of Transmission Gully open. This decision comes as a direct response to the anticipated influx of over 10,000 visitors to the Kāpiti Food Fair, an event poised to draw a significant crowd from across the wider Wellington region this Saturday.

Originally, NZTA had scheduled essential maintenance work on the northbound lanes, which would have necessitated their closure. However, to ensure smoother traffic flow and accommodate fair-goers, these specific closures have been deferred.

Ongoing Motorway Remediation

This ongoing work is part of a substantial $32 million remediation project on the $1.25 billion Transmission Gully motorway, which opened just over three years ago. The significant investment addresses original construction shortcomings, particularly the incomplete chip sealing. Engineers are currently focused on rebuilding six kilometers of road affected by water seepage into the pavement and completing 18 kilometers of chip sealing across various sections.

Travel Advisory for the Weekend

While this weekend's major northbound lane closure is cancelled, NZTA still advises motorists to prepare for potential minor lane closures and expect longer-than-usual travel times throughout the weekend. As an alternative route, drivers can consider using State Highway 59. The agency emphasizes the importance of planning journeys accordingly to minimize disruption.
