Sudan's War Deepens: RSF Accuses SAF of Drone Attack on Vital Adre Border Crossing

As Sudan’s devastating civil war enters its third year, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have leveled serious accusations against the government-aligned Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The RSF claims the SAF launched a drone attack on the crucial Adre border crossing near Chad, a lifeline for humanitarian aid.

Adre Crossing: A Critical Humanitarian Lifeline Under Fire

In a statement released via Telegram on Friday, the RSF specifically alleged that drones targeted the Adikon Gate at the Adre crossing. This vital corridor links Sudan and Chad, serving as an essential conduit for both humanitarian assistance and commercial supplies reaching war-affected civilians. Footage purportedly from the scene depicted plumes of smoke and active fires, with civilians observing the unfolding chaos.

The RSF asserted that this bombing was a deliberate attempt to impede the flow of humanitarian aid and obstruct relief operations, thereby exacerbating the suffering of civilians already caught in the conflict. The group also criticized what it termed “international silence” regarding alleged army violations, suggesting it emboldens further atrocities against non-combatants and critical infrastructure. No immediate reports on casualties or the extent of damage were available.

Escalating Atrocities and Humanitarian Crisis

The accusation comes amidst a backdrop of widespread violence and war crime allegations against both warring factions. The RSF itself has faced scrutiny for alleged atrocities, most recently in el-Fasher, North Darfur State. Conversely, the SAF has also been accused of war crimes.

Just a day prior to this incident, military sources within the SAF informed Al Jazeera that the death toll from RSF attacks in Kalogi, South Kordofan state, had escalated to approximately 47 people, predominantly children, with around 50 others injured. The sources detailed that the RSF initially targeted a kindergarten on Thursday, then returned to attack civilians who had gathered to assist amidst the carnage.

Staggering Human Cost and Stalled Peace Efforts

The broader toll of Sudan’s conflict is staggering. While definitive figures remain elusive, estimates suggest over 100,000 lives have been lost, and nearly 12 million people displaced, according to United Nations data. Furthermore, more than 24 million Sudanese now face acute hunger, highlighting a severe humanitarian crisis.

Despite United States President Donald Trump’s stated commitment to leading peace efforts, negotiations to end the conflict have stalled. The RSF has continued its offensive operations across the country, even after announcing a unilateral ceasefire. In response, the SAF has demanded the paramilitary group withdraw from all occupied territories, indicating the deep impasse that prolongs the suffering of the Sudanese people.
