A shocking act of violence has rocked a South African hostel, where gunmen mercilessly killed at least 12 individuals, including three children, and left 13 others injured in an early morning assault. The brutal incident occurred in Saulsville township, situated just 11 miles (18km) west of Pretoria.
Details of the Tragic Attack
Among the deceased are a three-year-old child, a 12-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack. Ten victims died at the scene, with two more succumbing to their injuries in hospital shortly after, and a twelfth victim passing away on Saturday afternoon. In total, 25 people were shot during the rampage.
Police Launch Manhunt Amid Illegal Bar Probe
South African police have launched an intensive "manhunt" for three suspects believed to be responsible for the killings. Investigators are probing a potential link between the massacre and an illegal bar, known locally as a shebeen, operating within the hostel premises. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the police are actively pursuing leads.
Escalating Violence and Illegal Establishments
This tragic event is the latest in a troubling series of mass shootings plaguing South Africa, a nation with one of the world's highest murder rates. Authorities frequently link such violence to the proliferation of illegal bars, which often sell unregulated home-brewed alcohol, and the country's high levels of gun ownership.
"These illegal shebeens are really giving us a problem as the police," Mathe stated during an interview with eNCA news. "Because a lot of murders are being reported at these illegal establishments."
The problem is exacerbated by organized crime, with police indicating that alcohol often fuels these violent confrontations. Forensic and ballistic experts, alongside investigators, were deployed to the scene to gather evidence.
A Nation Grappling with Crime
The statistics underscore the grim reality: police data reveals that between April and September, an average of over 60 people were killed daily across South Africa.
