In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Japan has reported that Chinese fighter jets illuminated Japanese aircraft with fire-control radar in international airspace near the Okinawan islands. These incidents, described by Japan's Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi as "dangerous acts," occurred in two separate instances on a recent Saturday.
Immediate Japanese Reaction and Formal Protest
Minister Koizumi promptly voiced Japan's strong disapproval, lodging a formal protest with China over what he termed "regrettable" events. In a statement posted on X, he emphasized that "These radar illuminations went beyond what is necessary for the safe flight of aircraft," highlighting the potential for miscalculation and conflict in the sensitive region.
Rising Tensions and Broader Geopolitical Context
The close proximity of these encounters to the Okinawan islands, which lie near territories contested by both Japan and China, is expected to further strain diplomatic ties. Relations between the two Asian powers were already under pressure following a stark warning from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Takaichi had previously indicated that Japan might intervene if Chinese military action against Taiwan were to jeopardize Japan's own national security.

Further complicating the situation, Japan confirmed that the Chinese aircraft involved were J-15 fighter jets. These jets reportedly launched from China's Liaoning aircraft carrier, which was observed maneuvering south of the Okinawan islands.
